Biscuits Cookbook - Sweet and Savory Southern Recipes for the All-American Kitchen

Do you like your biscuits sweet or savory?  Whatever the answer, the new Biscuits Cookbook by Jackie Garvin of Syrup and Biscuits, is filled with plenty of recipes to please any biscuit lover.

Biscuits are a comfort food that any southerner has surely been eating since childhood.  I remember using my granny’s homemade biscuits to sop up cane syrup poured out of a big bottle.  In addition to the many recipes in this cookbook, Jackie’s down-to-earth stories of her Southern heritage bring back some precious memories  for me.

Jackie didn’t actually perfect her biscuit-making skills until after she started her blog.  She says that decades of biscuit failure combined with exhaustive biscuit research has produced surefire techniques, tips and knowledge that is reliable.  That’s what she’s sharing in her cookbook.  Just goes to show you that there’s hope for anyone who’s failed at making homemade biscuits.

By the way, Jackie and I met at a conference 3 years ago and she’s just the sweetest.  Check out her blog when you get a chance.

    My favorite way to have biscuits is to split them open while still slightly warm and top them with sweetened fresh strawberries and real whipped cream that I have whipped myself. When our family goes strawberry picking, that evening we do make a meal like that of strawberry shortcakes. Yum!

    My favorite biscuits are rolled lengthwise, cut into breadstick like strips, rolled in butter and baked until crispy brown. I serve with Italian tomato dishes. Of course slightly sweetened biscuits make the very best shortcake for strawberry shortcake. I LOVE biscuits.

    My grandmother was the amazing southern cook in our family and she made the best homemade buttermilk biscuits! I would use butter and strawberry jelly BUT I love a really good biscuit with Sausage Gravy too! That is my favorite way to eat them! Love homemade sausage gravy over them…. YUM!

  17. I love my biscuits with butter and honey, but sometimes I use them as the topping for my chicken pot pie. I also don’t mind my husband’s sausage gravy for them, but he hasn’t made it in years.

    The thought of biscuits immediately brings my beloved Mom back to me. Whenever I smell them baking no matter where, I can “see and feel” my Mom all around me. My first memory of biscuits were when I was a very little girl and Mom would be rolling out the biscuit dough. She would always have some special dough on the side for me to roll out with the tiny rolling pin with the red handles she gave me and the special little baking pan just for me. Oh what a treat it was to get into that flour and roll out & cut those biscuits with the unique small cutters she had all ready for me. No matter how imperfect they turned out, she would always tell me they were great. Mom was the family “Biscuit Queen”. Everyone would always ask her to bring them to any of our family and friends’ gatherings. She even sent them to family in the service – including all the way to my sailor brother who was stationed in Okinawa, Japan! Mom could make plain, sweet and savory biscuits – didn’t matter what kind, they were all always devoured! My all time favorite was her Anise Biscuits-my mouth is watering just remembering them. Thank you and Bless you Mom for the love, kindness and memories and oh yes, thank you for those delicious biscuits, too! ♥

      How do I take my biscuits? VERY SERIOUSLY!! Whether they are topped with jam, slathered in butter and honey, covered generously with sausage and gravy, or baked atop a creamy pot pie … Yep … biscuits are always the crowning jewel of the table … and they do the tummy good! :)

    I take my biscuits hot, fresh and homemade! Covered in my homemade applesauce….mmmm! I can all kinds of yummy foods each year and a family favorite is my fresh applesauce made from local NC apples. I pop open a quart jar, melt some butter in the pot with it and add a bit of sugar…once hot, pour it over homemade buscuits like gravy! Its PHENOMENAL! Will change your life.

    For savory; split hot biscuits top with scrambled eggs containing a couple of tablespoons chive sour cream, NM hot green chile (roasted and diced) and a bit of salt and pepper. Plus one more savory idea; Split hot biscuit top with a thin slice of good quality extra sharp cheddar cheese and a good quality Major Greys’ Mango Chutney with plenty of mango,ginger and sultanas*, *large sweet golden raisins. The extra sharp cheddar cheese chutney combo is really great with a good strong black tea preferably Irish or English. Quick; Good and hot split with butter, and honey or boysenberry preserves.
